OUR VALUES
Lismore Meals on Wheels Services Inc (Lismore MOW) is funded by the Australian Government, Department of Health under the Commonwealth Home Support Program. Lismore MOW is a not for profit organisation which is registered as a Public Benevolent Institution Charity and is an Incorporated Association under the Fair Trading Act.
Lismore MOW provides food services to eligible frail aged, older people aged over 65 and frail older Aboriginal people over 50 and people with a disability living in the Lismore local government areas and surrounding villages such as Nimbin, Wollongbar and Alstonville.
WHO WE ARE
We are committed to safety, privacy, respect, compassion and excellence. Lismore MOW embraces the concept of a client-centred approach. All staff are required to display an attitude and behave in a manner which is in keeping with Lismore MOW’s philosophy on client focus, that is, to provide a service to clients which is courteous, friendly and supportive and professional to both clients and work colleagues.
When working with clients, Lismore MOW works from a client-centred approach. A client-centred approach is based on what is meaningful to the individual client. Any support options are determined according to the individual goals of the client. A client-centred approach requires that the staff put aside what they think is best for the client and trusts that the client can and will, with support and assistance, identify the behaviours they wish to change and the goals they want to pursue.
HISTORY OF MEALS ON WHEELS
Founded in Britain during World War II to assist frail older people to remain living in their own homes, Meals on Wheels began its work in Australia in Melbourne in 1952 when a former volunteer from England started cooking and delivering meals on her tricycle. From such humble beginnings, Meals on Wheels in NSW now prepares and delivers 4.5 million meals annually to people living in cities and regional and rural areas across NSW Australia. 14,000 volunteers in NSW alone each year currently give their time to ensure that frail and elderly people and those with disabilities and their carers receive tasty and nutritional meals delivered to their door.
In 1963, Meals on Wheels came to Lismore when a local businessman purchased cooking equipment and hired a cook to provide 33 meals. With the help of his employees and family members who delivered the meals, the service grew extensively and was eventually taken over by the Country Women’s Association. In 1983 Lismore Base Hospital commenced the supply of meals. In 1994, Lismore Meals on Wheels amalgamated with the smaller Alstonville service. The service now has 150 volunteers and delivers nourishing meals five days a week across the region.
While the tradition and values of Meals on Wheels remain true to its origins, a focus on engaging people of all ages from all walks of life is unfolding and brings renewed energy, ideas and vision to help the organisation continue to provide its vital service and meet the needs of the community.
